People who are strongly averse to God don't care for evidence, they
simply want to maintain their independence from God.
The material world and the conditioned souls in it are conducted by
the material modes of nature.
Krishna says:
O winner of wealth, now please listen as I tell you in detail of the
different kinds of understanding and determination, according to the
three modes of material nature. (Bg 18.29)
O son of Pritha, that understanding by which one knows what ought to
be done and what ought not to be done, what is to be feared and what
is not to be feared, what is binding and what is liberating, is in the
mode of goodness. (Bg 18.30)
O son of Pritha, that understanding which cannot distinguish between
religion and irreligion, between action that should be done and action
that should not be done, is in the mode of passion. (Bg 18.31)
That understanding which considers irreligion to be religion and
religion to be irreligion, under the spell of illusion and darkness,
and strives always in the wrong direction, O Partha, is in the mode of
ignorance. (Bg 18.32)
What Krishna is saying here is that people in whom the mode of
goodness is prominent, they can see what is what, and they know how to
act. People in the mode of passion are always in doubt as to what is
right or wrong, they are in doubt about what to do and what not to do.
People in the mode of ignorance, however, have no doubts. They are
completely convinced, but of the wrong things.
So no amount of good advice or good arguments are going to convince
them. People in tama-guna are very strong in their convictions, even
thought there is no basis for them. Therefore they are always striving
in the wrong direction.
Krishna says:
This divine energy of Mine, consisting of the three modes of material
nature, is difficult to overcome. But those who have surrendered unto
Me can easily cross beyond it. -Bg 7.14
