Is the human soul important? And why?
There is no such thing as a human soul. The soul is a minute particle
of God's consciousness, and that soul is inside of all living
entities, from an amoeba, a tree, and up to humans.
The human life-form offers the soul a unique and very rare chance for
self-realization. It's very important for the soul, once it has been
awarded a human form of life, that it uses this life-form properly,
meaning to connect with God.
Eating, sleeping, mating and defending, the soul can do in any
life-form, only in the human form can the soul connect with God, and
become free from samsara - the endless cycle of i birth and death.
A human being who doesn't take advantage of that rare opportunity,
signals to nature that he doesn't need a human life-form, and that
soul will be sent back to yet another round in the 8 million lower
life-forms.
"There are 900,000 species of aquatic life; 2,000,000 species of
plants and trees; 1,100,000 species of insects; 1,000,000 species of
bird life; 3,000,000 species of beasts, and 400,000 species of human
life." (Padma Purana)
Lord Brahma says:
One attains the human form of life after transmigrating through
8,400,000 species by the process of gradual evolution. That human life
is spoiled for those conceited fools who do not take shelter of the
lotus feet of Govinda.
--Brahma-vaivarta Purana
